Meeting Edith: A Story of Growth and Triumph

Edith’s Journey: Overcoming Feeding Challenges and Thriving with UCP

Three-year-old Edith has been a part of UCP since her early months, receiving occupational, physical, and feeding therapy. Throughout her time at UCP, she has blossomed into a sweet and curious individual, with therapists witnessing her remarkable progress.

Transforming Edith’s Eating Habits: The Power of Feeding Therapy

Edith’s journey with solid foods was initially challenging, only starting at the age of two and a half. Heather, Edith’s mother, recalls the significant impact of feeding therapy in just a few sessions. With the support of UCP’s feeding therapy scholarship, Edith’s preferences shifted dramatically. One unforgettable moment was when she took her first bite of a pickle, eventually devouring the entire thing. From that point on, Edith’s appetite expanded, embracing various foods, including her beloved pizza and Doritos.

Therapeutic Triumph: The Multifaceted Care at UCP

UCP provides Edith with a comprehensive range of therapies, including occupational and physical therapy, in addition to feeding therapy. Heather praises the exceptional work of Ms. Brittany, Edith’s occupational therapist, who goes above and beyond to address her specific challenges. Through Brittany’s guidance, Edith has made significant strides in hand-eye coordination and problem-solving, demonstrated by her newfound ability to correctly place shapes in a sorter. Heather also highlights the crucial role of Ms. Samar in facilitating Edith’s progress. By engaging in activities like climbing stairs and balancing on a beam, Edith not only enhances her physical abilities but also learns valuable skills for social interaction and playtime with her peers.

Lessons from Edith: A Mother’s Perspective

Heather recognizes the profound impact that UCP has had on Edith’s development. She emphasizes how Edith’s newfound abilities have transformed their lives, with Edith even teaching Heather important lessons in patience and empathy. Through UCP’s therapists, Edith has learned to manage frustration and extend a helping hand to others, inspiring her mother on a daily basis.

UCP of Central Arizona: Empowering Individuals with Disabilities

Since its establishment in 1952, UCP of Central Arizona has dedicated itself to helping individuals with disabilities unlock their full potential and integrate seamlessly into their communities. Heather’s heartfelt words encapsulate the organization’s mission perfectly. By treating children with special needs with respect, inclusivity, and equality, society can create an environment where every child, regardless of ability, is embraced and valued.
